OotiniCast Episode 127

This week we talk about the Q&A from the Community Cantina in Boulder, the PvP Q&A, and more. Then Chill interviews Kana’ba, #1 Guardian on the Ranked PvP leaderboard.

2. Tip of the week

Congratulations to this week’s winner, David!

Please send your tips to ootinicast@gmail.com by next Wednesday for a chance to win a Tawnfaun code, courtesy of BioWare, and an OotiniCast-provided Cartel Market pack from the latest shipment.

3. Holofeed

  • The PTS is closing this coming Monday (31 March) at 10am CDT (4pm BST, 2am AEDT) ahead of the deployment of Game Update 2.7 on Tuesday 8 April.
  • Friend of the show Jason Connell (@Jayconnell) attended the Community Cantina held last Saturday (22 March) in Boulder, Colorado. He wrote up his experiences, which we posted here. Based on the question about new planets coming to SWTOR, I started a thread in the SWTOR sub-Reddit, which garnered some most interesting replies.
  • The second round of answers in the resumed Class Representative program have arrived, this time for Powertechs/Vanguards.
  • Jason Attard clarified what increasing power to a particular pool (weapons, shields or engines) in Galactic Starfighter actually does, how power pool regeneration works (there are two separate regeneration rates) and the effect of range on accuracy and damage.
  • Eric Musco (Community Manager) has published a series of answers to commonly-asked questions about PvP, with the intention of being transparent about their current plans and thinking. He reiterated that things may change in the medium- to long-term, but for now this is how things are.

4. Community

See this thread on our forums for more about the Community Cantina in Las Vegas happening in November, which will coincide with our first recording of OotiniCast where all the hosts will (hopefully!) be in the same room.

Community Cantina – Boulder, Colorado

(Editor’s note: Longtime friend of the show Jason Connell (@Jayconnell) attended the Community Cantina held in Boulder, Colorado on Saturday 22 March 2014. He’s provided this write-up of the Q&A and his other observations of the event. Thanks Jay!)

We got to the event about an hour and 15 minutes early and there were probably a hundred people in line already. It was hard to tell the total length of the line as it went around a couple of different corners.

I would guess two hundred or so people were there. The room they booked had about six large tables and five or six standing tables. We grabbed the last standing table when we got in. By the time the Q&A started, the room was standing room only with quite a few people sitting on the ground to the left and right of the stage.

Courtney Woods, Ben, Cory Butler (Producer) and Blain Christine were the devs present.

SWTOR_WelcomeHometoCoruscant

At the risk of sounding elitist, I have to say that anyone who listens to OotiniCast regularly or pays attention to the dev posts on the official forums would have gained very little ‘new’ info from the Q&A. I kind of felt like I could have answered quite a few of the questions asked as they are common topics on OotiniCast, the SWTOR sub-reddit, and the SWTOR forums.

The following is my summary of the Q&A. I took far more notes and paid more attention to the less common questions.

Q: Someone asked what kind of items would be allowed into legacy storage.
A: That is still in development. It’s something they are still working out.

Q: Guild ship PvP
A: Not going to happen any time soon. Wall of Crazy™.

Q: GSF PvE
A: Currently on the Wall of Crazy™. However, Blain did mention how much weight is placed on feedback from Community Cantinas and that space PvE is something they get a LOT of questions about. The tone of his response left me thinking that GSF PvE is something that is fairly high on their list of possible future content.

Q: Open Space PvP
A: Totally Wall of Crazy™.

Q: More class story?
A: They would rather spend time on content that everyone can play rather than one person at a time.

Q: More GSF maps?
A: Yes. More are coming.

Q: Pazaak?
A: Wall of Crazy™.

Q: Mac (OS X) client coming?
A: Currently no plans are in the works for an OS X client. Blain and Cory both worked for some leading edge company that ported lots of games to the Mac. While they both had a “vested interest” in the topic, it is not something that BioWare is considering at this time. Blain mentioned that it’s more of a business problem than them having the ability to do it. Cory said Boot Camp works (allowing SWTOR to run when booted into Windows on a Mac).

Q: Open world PvP
A: They kinda hinted that something different was coming. Crowd was getting a little rowdy at this point so I only heard them say that they (BioWare) really liked the Gree world event, and considered it a success.

Q: New planet!
A: Someone asked about a planet that was in Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR). I didn’t play KOTOR so I can’t say what the planet was. Based on the BioWare team’s facial reactions and the very sarcastic reaction of “Wow, yeah that’s a really great idea!” I think he threw a bull’s eye on something in development now. I would speculate that we will be getting that KOTOR planet eventually.

(Editor’s note: Excluding Taris, Korriban and Tatooine which are already in SWTOR, KOTOR included Dantooine, Telos, Manaan, Lehon and Kashyyyk. Dantooine is kind of boring, Telos has too much overlap with Taris, Manaan is a waterworld and Lehon, the Rakaata homeworld, wasn’t visited directly, and it seems we’re done with the Rakata. I’d suggest that Kashyyyk, the Wookiee homeworld, is the most likely candidate to add to SWTOR.)

Q: Achievements
A: I asked the question “Are there any plans to start rewarding achievements with something other than cartel coins and prestige?” He responded by repeating the question and adding “like a title”. He smiled, said one word “Yes” and handed the mic back to Courtney. So (at the very least) we are getting titles for achievement rewards.

Q: Level cap increase?
A: Another sarcastic “Wow, that’s a really great idea” type of answer. While they didn’t actually say “yes, it’s going up”, it was kinda hard to think that it would not be going up in 2014.

I did get to speak with Blain before the Q&A started while he was mingling around the room. I asked him Red’s other question about monetization of F2P (free-to-play) and allowing Preferred players in Ranked PvP. Short answer: No. Blain’s elaborated answer: Blain was very active in the F2P transfer, and it was a topic that came up often. At the end of the day they decided that the Ranked PvP players are the most dedicated PvPers out there and as such they tend to be subscribers anyways. Catering to F2P and Preferred players in Ranked PvP would have been focusing too small of a player base to warrant the required resources it would take to implement.

We had a great time! It was very cool meeting the guys who make the game we love. They are really passionate gamers. I feel better about SWTOR knowing the people behind it are so into what they do!

OotiniCast Episode 125

Player housing will be arriving sooner than we thought! In Game Update 2.8, early access will begin for Galactic Strongholds, SWTOR’s second free-to-play digital expansion. We discuss all the details we have so far, with plenty of speculation about what is yet to come.

1. Introduction

Teo is using the Sith Lords Restored Content Mod (version 1.8.2) in his playthrough of KOTOR2.

2. Tip of the week

Congratulations to this week’s winner, Jaylan!

Please send your tips to ootinicast@gmail.com by next Wednesday for a chance to win a Tawnfaun code, courtesy of BioWare, and an OotiniCast-provided Cartel Market pack from the latest shipment.

3. Holofeed

  • Game Update 2.6.2 was deployed during a long (7.5 hours) maintenance on Tuesday. The extended duration was due to technical housekeeping rather than the volume of the content being added and/or changed.
  • The double XP weekend that ended on Saint Patrick’s Day was marred by issues granting only normal (not doubled) XP to groups going through Kuat Drive Yards, and no XP at all to some group compositions in Flashpoints. The latter issue was resolved in Game Update 2.6.2. Another double XP weekend will be scheduled soon, hopefully (but not necessarily) after the Kuat Drive Yards issue is also fixed.
  • Some in-game graphical glitches that can be encountered, such as missing or delayed textures when zoning into new areas or after a new patch, can be due to the streaming client (identified by “ST” written in the bottom left corner of the Launcher once you’ve logged in), which can be resolved by following these instructions.
  • Following the Community Cantina that will be held this Saturday (22 March) in Boulder, Colorado, the next Community Cantina will be in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday 11 April.

3. Holofeed

  • Game Update 2.6.1a was deployed during maintenance on Tuesday.
  • Bounty Contract Week is back for another week, and will conclude on Tuesday 18 March at 2am PDT. It overlaps with the double XP weekend that will run from Friday 14 (11am PDT, 6pm GMT, Saturday 5am AEDT) through to Monday 17 March (midnight PDT, 7am GMT, 6pm AEDT).
  • If you are subscribed on Saint Patrick’s Day (Monday 17 March), you will receive the Lucky-77 Swoop for all your characters. It was showcased in a recently released trailer.
  • The Q&A from the Community Cantina in Atlanta was made available on YouTube.
  • The SWTOR Insider video for March 2014, featuring Cory Butler (Producer) and Andrew Horwitz (Associate Producer) discusses what’s coming up in Game Update 2.7. This included a mention of the Quesh Huttball Pit warzone, which now also has its own developer blog written by Alex Modny, who subsequently indicated that the concern about “snipers on the pipe” controlling the middle area is recognised and encouraged. Rob Hinkle also commented on how often the new warzone would pop once it was deployed.
  • BioWare have released a new teaser trailer for what they’re calling the SSHP, presumably the “Super Secret Housing Project”. Larry Everett (who authored the now defunct Hyperspace Beacon column on Massively, which he now runs on his own site) has done a detailed breakdown of the trailer.
  • The first set of answers in the resumed Class Representative initiative have been posted for Sith Marauders and Jedi Sentinels.
  • The web-based Leaderboards have not been updating for a week, but are now fixed.

3. Holofeed

  • At the Community Cantina held in Atlanta, the thumb drive (via Dulfy) provided to attendees included a “first look” inside scoop of what was coming in Game Update 2.7: Invasion.
  • Game Update 2.7 is now on the PTS. In addition to the class changes and other content already revealed, it seems that Nightmare Mode operations will now have their “Nightmare Power” buff removed by BioWare after some amount of time; clearing the operation while the buff is in effect will grant a unique title.
  • It was confirmed that separating Hard Mode and Nightmare Mode into separate weekly lockouts will apply to all existing operations.
  • Four new starfighters are being added: a new Scout and Strike Fighter for each faction. Two can be seen in this trailer (also on YouTube).
  • The various exploits that are being used in PvP to take advantage of bugs in Bolster should (theoretically) be fixed in Game Update 2.7.
  • Matt Dondelinger (Associate Designer) assures the community that BioWare is listening to suggestions for new Cartel Market items based on existing in-game assets.

MSE-6 (SWTOR Ability Tracker) Tutorial

MSE-6 is an add-on that uses SWTOR’s Combat Log to assist the player with awareness of their abilities and in some cases of impending doom. MSE-6 reads the Combat Log and can be used to track any ability that is reported in the Combat Log.

What does this mean? Well, just think of all those DoTs and HoTs that you have to worry about applying and/or removing. Maybe you have an ability that you know you should use more, but it always seem to slip your mind. Well then, MSE-6 might be the program for you.

MSE-6 runs outside SWTOR, using audible tones to let you know when a designated action has been completed. There will be some setup and configuration on your part, but the developer has designed the program to make this as easy and painless as possible.

You can download MSE-6 from here.

OotiniCast Episode 122

Lots of news this week, including yet more class changes in Game Update 2.7 and some clarifications related to Ranked PvP Season 1’s reward system. Then returning guest Bill has yet more advice on enhancing your credit balance.

1. Introduction

2. Tip of the week

Congratulations to this week’s winner, Adam Schumpert! Adam has previously created some wonderful art for us, such as our Ootini Knights guild logo:

Please send your tips to ootinicast@gmail.com by next Wednesday for a chance to win a Tawnfaun code, courtesy of BioWare, and an OotiniCast-provided Cartel Market pack from the latest shipment.

3. Holofeed

  • Game Update 2.6.1 was deployed during the usual maintenance time on Tuesday morning.
  • The Class Representative Initiative is now active once more, with the schedule for the submission of each Advanced Class representative’s top three questions announced.
  • To receive any Ranked PvP Season 1 tier-based rewards, you must have played at least 10 Ranked arena matches. Note that it is your highest rating achieved, not your current rating, that counts when determining which tier you will be placed in.
  • Our speculation about the uniqueness of the Rancor mount being received by Tier 1 players at the end of Ranked PvP Season 1 has been resolved with confirmation that Rancor mounts (with differing appearances) will indeed be available elsewhere in future, starting with a very rare Cyborg Rancor from Nightmare Mode Dread Palace, and then more “basic” models to be found in other parts of the game (including Cartel Market packs).
  • The Bolster exploit utilising lower-level blue mods that Jacob described in the last episode has been identified as a bug that BioWare will be fixing. It seems this will be resolved for Game Update 2.7 where there will be a new set of PvP gear.
  • Teo would like to see Bolster at level 55 significantly simplified, as he describes in this forum post.
  • Game Update 2.7’s appearance on the PTS has been delayed from the originally announced Monday 24 February. No ETA is currently available.
  • From Game Update 2.7, Hard Mode and Nightmare Mode will no longer share the same lockout.
  • More class changes (subsequently adding changes for the Commando and Mercenary) for Game Update 2.7 have been announced, in addition to those already released.

Converting to F2P in SWTOR

Check me out at @Strongshocker on Twitter if you like this.

A smooth conversion to free-to-play (F2P) can be accomplished with careful planning. Ever since I have switched I have noticed no change in my SWTOR experience. Yes, I receive less comms (and potentially less Ship and Fleet Requisition), but I enjoy the game and this does not bother me. Here are some tips that I have learned throughout my transition to help others who want to try F2P, but are scared to do so. Remember, you can always go back to being a subscriber!

Account Security

If you are a F2P player converting from a subscription, you can still have a mobile Security Key on your account. You will no longer get the Cartel Coin bonus for the mobile Security Key, but you can live at ease knowing your F2P account is much safer. Note that if you have the physical Security Key FOB, you will get the 100 CC/month stipend.

Recommended character unlocks (Account-wide where available)

You should purchase any Legacy Unlock that costs more than 350K credits and you think you will use (especially Legacy Travel: Personal Starship, Repair Droid, and add-ons to your personal starship).

Some other suggestions:

  • Guild bank access
  • Bank slots
  • Extra Quickbars
  • Hide Head
  • Match Chest
  • Extra Bag Slots
  • Match Companion Chest
  • Event Gear (may be removed)
  • Third Crew Skill

Travel

You do not get access to Emergency Fleet Passes as a F2P player, so make the most of your Legacy Travel: Personal Starship. You can get it on a relatively short cooldown.

Re-spec’ing

You will no longer get infinite re-specs for free. It goes back to the original system where the cost scales up through the week, and resets every Tuesday morning. This is highly beneficial if you have one character you only want to PvP with and one that you want to PvE with.

Gearing up

You only get three chances to win a gear item in a Flashpoint when rolling Need. However, you can Greed win all day or trade items afterward. So run with friends or use that charisma to charm the items out of the people in your group.

You can also run Flashpoints for as many comms as you need, so make the most of it!

Money Problems?

Savings on the Side

If you are Legendary with any of the rep factions, you can store the rep faction tokens as free money for later. It isn’t much, but if you’re knocking out the dailies anyway for some cash, these are like money you can store on the side for a rainy day. Running just Space Missions, you can store away an extra 3000 credits/week. Not much, but remember, that’s only one faction. Legendary with 3-4 factions can be up to 20,000 credits that the game doesn’t count towards your F2P credit cap. This is especially helpful since an F2P player cannot send money via in-game mail between characters.

Make the most of your friends

Before I went F2P I had about 6 million credits. I gave 3 million to 2 of my real-life friends who have remained subscribers. They don’t have credit caps, and so now I have a savings account off to the side. Also, you can’t buy high-end gear since finding it cheaper than 350K is hard. Have your friends buy it and send it your way. The same goes for selling items on the GTN that cost more than 350K.

PvP, Operations and GSF

I have not missed a full week of PvP or an operation since I switched to F2P. Currently, weekly unlocks are selling on my server for only 50-90K! Stock up before you go F2P. I recently let my subscription lapse, but not before having three months worth of PvP and Ops passes. Try to buy items like weekly unlocks whenever they are on sale or whenever you are close to your credit cap.

Currently, F2P players cannot do solo Ranked. However, I have been able to queue with three subscribers for a Ranked team. It still puts up the warning that you cannot queue, but the queue will pop. And with the current Ranked PvP system failing miserably, it is probably only a matter of time until they open it to F2P players with a weekly pass.

Passes are available for GSF (Galactic Starfighter). On my server the price varies from 240K-500K for a 30-day pass. With help from some friends (and guildies), I now have 150 days worth of GSF passes. This gives me Fleet and Ship Requisition at the same rate as a subscriber, no difference!
