OotiniCast Episode 181 (Theorycrafting roundtable)

In our first theorycrafting roundtable, KeyboardNinja and Oofalong discuss the changes wrought by Game Update 3.0, and provide plenty of nuanced advice to help players min/max their characters.

Oofalong was interviewed in episode 141. He can be found on Reddit and the official forums. He has also authored the SWTOR Mechanics Basics series on Dulfy’s site, and has updated his relic analysis for Game Update 3.0.

KeyboardNinja was interview in episode 145. You can contact him on the official forums, either by replying to him in threads he’s participating in, or by sending him a private message. His Ideal Tank Stat Distribution post has been updated for Game Update 3.0 (due to a mishap on the official forums, the Roles forum containing KeyboardNinja’s Ideal Tank Stat Distribution post was deleted; while they’re trying to restore it, he’s temporarily reposted here). He has also authored a guide for Ruffian Scoundrels and Lethality Operatives.

OotiniCast Episode 180

In the news, we cover Game Update 3.0.1, the return of the Life Day event, and what we reckon is better than cross-server queues. Then we discuss Ilmarinen’s statistical analysis of the results from the first three seasons of arena-based Ranked PvP.

1. Introduction

2. Tip of the week

Congratulations to this week’s winner, Jerrold (Sentinel and Vanguard of the Valhalla guild on Jedi Covenant)! Thanks to Holmes/Mf-doom, Frettz, Chong, Thraxis and Mariachi for entering.

Please send your tips to ootinicast@gmail.com by next Wednesday for a chance to win a Taunfawn code, courtesy of BioWare, and an OotiniCast-provided Cartel Market pack from the latest shipment.

3. Holofeed

  • Game Update 3.0.1 was deployed during regular maintenance on Tuesday morning. It includes some changes to help alleviate performance issues experienced by players, with further problems still being investigated. The Rishi achievements that were lost on logout have been fixed, but will have to be earned one more time.
  • The Life Day event is back, running from 16 December to 6 January 2015. This guide on the official forums will tell you all you need to know about farming the Overheated Life Day Droids.
  • The Gree event did not return as anticipated, due to problems with scaling the event up to level 60. It is being worked on, and so will return eventually.
  • The 12 Days of SWTOR Cartel Market sale begins on Thursday 18 December, and concludes on Monday 29 December. It features the sale of embargoed Cartel Market packs, with a different pack available each day.
  • See this post for details about the Third Anniversary Rewards. There is also a Facebook album with memorable moments from the game’s developers.
  • While it was suggested prior to the release of Game Update 3.0, we will not get more Accuracy percentage per point from the Accuracy stat.
  • The tank stance for all three tanking Advanced Classes is reducing their damage dealt by 20%, rather than the intended 10%.
  • It seems that Game Update 3.0.2 will be deployed at the end of the Third Anniversary event on Tuesday 13 January 2015. It will include adding level 55 Hard Mode and Tactical Flashpoints ot the Group Finder for level 60 players, granting the achievement for defeating the Torch in the Blood Hunt Tactical Flashpoint, and the change of the Ranked PvP Season 3 title of “The Furious” to “Fairly Furious”.
  • BioWare has given us some very revealing hints about how they intended to solve the queuing issues for both PvE and PvP. Teo’s assessment is that we are getting megaservers!
  • While the final details have yet to be confirmed, Eric Musco (Community Manager) has announced as much as he currently knows about the Community Cantina that will be held at PAX South.

  • Andrew Horwitz (Associate Producer) welcomed us to the early access week for the Shadow of Revan expansion.

  • Developer blogs were published for Gunslingers/Snipers and Scoundrels/Operatives, and David Demaree and Eric Musco did their fourth and last livestream to cover this set of Advanced Classes.
  • With the third anniversary of the game looming, BioWare has published another infographic with some mind-blowing stats about SWTOR!
  • The new Star Wars movie coming 18 December next year now has a teaser trailer! You can find plenty of analysis of it out there, along with some crazy extrapolations based on the new “Crusader sword” style of lightsaber.

Kuze on obtaining the new datacrons in Game Update 3.0

Good News Everyone!

We have new Datacrons to strive for in Game Update 3.0! Not to brag (well kind of) but I amazingly predicted that the new expansion would have datacrons for all primary stats, and that’s exactly what we have. This was an easy prediction since the last expansion only had datacrons for Endurance and Presence.

To your like or dislike there are no platforming nightmares involved with getting these new datacrons. Remember, not all datacrons in-game required some sort of platforming to obtain them. Some may only require a simple item to unlock a chest, or another individual to help push a button. This is the same way for 3.0, but is a little more elaborate than just grabbing one item.

To gather the datacrons in Game Update 3.0 you will have to work through five steps. I will give a quick summary with notes, but a full guide with pictures can be found on Dulfy. After completing the full chain you will end up with achievements, titles, a Codex entry (if working), and a stat boost of course. This can be done solo, with a group, and/or summon people during the final step. The key is that after the first step only one person should be completing the final four steps due to the buffs only applying to one person.

The first thing you have to do is collect 3 different “Data Packets” from 3 different rare spawns. These are pig-like creators call Grophets. Note that:

  • A specific “Data Packet” will drop off each rare named Grophet, but are tradable between players.
  • Comments have been made about not using the “Sell Junk” button on vendors to avoid selling the “Data Packets”. Check your inventory when you pick one up.
  • Be on the lookout for any champion level named pigs during your travels.

Second, head to Slave Island and find the “Cybernetic Skull”. Consume the 3 “Data Packets”, then click the skull for a buff. All three packets must be consumed by one person only.

Third, grab the “Deep Sea Pheromones” at the Raider’s Cove Trade port. At this point you should have two buffs: “Neural Imprint” and “Incredible Smell”.

Fourth, go to Sky Ridge Island and find the special rock formation (normal blue interactable color) that will point you to the datacron location. At this point you will be scanned for the appropriate buff.

Note that attempting these last steps without the buffs will result in death and no datacrons, Muahahaha!

Finally, go to the location designated by the blue beam and interact with another rock that will spawn friendly tentacles. The tentacles will then smash the rock open, revealing your long awaited treasure. It’s been noted that the rock is not clickable at times, you might want to try a UI reset (CTRL-U, CTRL-U) if this happens or a relog.

My suggestion is to complete your leveling process while keeping one eye out for the rare spawns and work with your guild to see if all the “Data Packets” have been collected. When your guild has all three “Data Packets” you can trade them to one individual to complete the quest chain, and summon everyone for the treasure buried by some crazy datacron pirates. When all the 3.0 hype is over, you can go back and solo the quest chain for all the achievements and such you missed out on.

Thanks for reading and good luck!

We talk about getting ready for Game Update 3.0, with early access happening on 2 December, and its full release on 9 December.

Note that to do the class-specific mission that is an optional part of the Shadow of Revan storyline, the character must have completed up to Act 3 (when you get the associated Achievement) in their class story.

The conversion ratios of our current PvE commendations into Basic Commendations when Game Update 3.0 is released have been announced and incorporated into our conversion calculator. The cap of 1000 Basic Commendations will remain, but an overflow/soft cap of up to 2000 will be used as part of the conversion. Note that you will not be able to earn any further Basic Commendations in Game Update 3.0 until you are under the 1000 cap.

Commendation conversion calculator for Game Update 3.0

The existing commendations for a given character will be converted into Basic Commendations during the deployment of Game Update 3.0, using the following ratios:

  • Classic Commendations 2:1
  • Basic Commendations 1:1
  • Elite Commendations 1:2
  • Ultimate Commendations 1:3
  • Planetary Commendations 1:3

While Basic Commendations have an overall cap (1000), an overflow cap of 2000 will be used for the one-time conversion. When Game Update 3.0 goes live, any Basic Commendations you have above the 2000 overflow cap will be lost.

In Game Update 3.0, Classic and Planetary Commendations will no longer exist, with Basic Commendations being effectively a universal, pre-endgame currency. Elite and Ultimate Commendations will start at 0, and can only be earned through endgame activities.

The following calculator allows you to enter your current number of Commendations; the order in which they’re listed should match what you see in the Currency tab of your inventory.

Classic Commendations:
Basic Commendations:
Elite Commendations:
Ultimate Commendations:
Planetary Commendations:

4. Holofeed

  • There was a press event for Shadow of Revan at the EA Redwood Shores campus in California on Wednesday 19 November. In attendance were both press and members of the community. The embargo on what was discussed will be lifted on Monday 24 November.
  • Game Update 2.10.3a was deployed on Tuesday.
  • When Game Update 3.0 goes live, all existing commendations (Classic, Basic, Elite, Ultimate, Planetary) will be converted into Basic Commendations at a to-be-determined ratio. While the hard cap for Basic Commendations will remain at 1000, there will be a soft/overflow cap to temporarily allow the hard cap to be exceeded when the conversion takes place.
  • The Obroan and Brutalizer sets (currently purchasable for Warzone Commendations and Ranked Warzone Commendations respectively) will be replaced by the two new PvP sets in Game Update 3.0. The existing PvE gear purchasable from vendors now will still be available in Game Update 3.0, but will be moved to a different vendor.
  • For Ranked PvP, the top 96 players across all Advanced Classes will be determined based on their current (not highest achieved) rating when Season 3 ends with the deployment of Game Update 3.0 on 2 December.
  • The mission dropbox will finally be installed on the Empire side of Ancient Hypergate in Game Update 3.0.
  • On Saturday evening, the last Community Cantina for the year was held in Las Vegas. Swtorista has provided a summary of the Q&A from a guildmate who was in attendance. Heather was also there, and described her experience on her blog.
  • Developer blogs were published for Sorcerers/Sages and Assassins/Shadows, and David Demaree and Eric Musco did their second livestream to cover this set of Advanced Classes.
