OotiniCast Episode 241

It’s time for our yearly retrospective! We discuss how we did in predicting what we’d see in 2015, cover what we actually got, and then outline our hopes and dreams (and our community’s) in 2016. Our guest Ivilon also shares the wonderful story of talking to JJ Abrams about the music in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

1. Introduction

During Ivilon’s explanation of his theory about Kylo Ren’s and Rey’s themes, he references the following scores which he annotated:

OotiniCast Episode 240

We talk about seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens (spoiler-free, of course). There’s also a little SWTOR news, including the broken events and the nVidia contest. Then more discussion in response to listener feedback about BioWare’s strategy going forward.

1. Introduction

Chill appeared on episode 25 of Alex’s GeEK Podcast. Alex talked about The HK-55 Bonus Chapter in SWTOR—How I would do, his latest blog post.

Sukai and his brother Mykre levelled from 1-65 using only the most basic of gear, as you can see in this video.

However, when told that it wasn’t without any gear, Sukai has taken on a near challenge: level a character which only has the starter items received when it was first created… and is now level 51 after three days!

In the news we cover December’s in-game events, server rollbacks, Jesse Sky’s departure from BioWare and some hope for those of us awaiting news of those missing MMO bits. Our guest Sir Salisbury then explains how BioWare can learn from the failure and subsequent rebirth of Final Fantasy XIV.

1. Introduction

Kranitoko got five players from Jedi Covenant to dress as Power Rangers for a video. They are Niska, Haykeen, Heazax, Duhbz and Daneburt:

Kranitoko - power rangers

Our guest Jeremy presented this Christmas present from his guilds Ewokalypse Now and Warchild:

Easy Mercenary Innovative Ordnance/Commando Assault Specialist rotation (for Operations where there is a lot of movement, especially The Ravagers and Temple of Sacrifice).

This rotation is not as complicated as Dulfy’s. With a mix of item rating 192 and 198 gear you can get above 4.3K DPS on a target dummy.

Build Up Stacks for

1. Build up stacks for Supercharged Gas/Supercharge Cell (SCG)/(SCC) (PreCast). Use on cooldown when EN (Electro Net) when available, otherwise when IM/IR is available. This will maximise the amount of burn time of all of your applied DoTs, and it always lowers your Heat/restores your Energy Cells.
2. Mag Shot (MS) / Mag Bolt (MB)
3. Serrated Shot (SS) / Serrated Bolt (SB). Should be instant from 2nd rotation onward
4. Thermal Detonator (TD) / Assault Plastique (AP)
5. Incendiary Missile (IM) / Incendiary Round (IR)
6. Electro Net (EN). 1st rotation only then off cooldown in this spot if possible
7. Rapid Shots (RS) / Hammer Shot (HS) (every even rotation: 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc. Once or twice depending on Heat/Energy Cells)
8. When available: Thermal Sensor Override (TSO)  / Reserve Powercell (RPC). Every odd rotation (start from 3rd rotation) – Unload (UL) / Full Auto (FA). This means that you will reduce more Heat (recoup more Energy Cells) in your rotation as UL / FA is a 2.5-3 second channel.
9. Mag Shot (MS) / Mag Bolt (MB)
10. Power Shot (PS) / Charged Bolts (CB)
11. Power Shot (PS) / Charged Bolts (CB) – This PS/CB will Proc Mag Shot/Mag Bolt

Repeat!

When target’s health is below 30%, instead of 10 and 11 use 12 and 13:

12. Missile Blast (MB) / Explosive Round (ER). This replaces ability 10.
13. Power Shot (PS) / Charged Bolts (CB)

Extra Tips

Energy Cells/Heat management rough guide

Rotation
1st – SCG/SCC, no TSO/RPC
2nd – TSO/RPC. no SCG/SCC
3rd – SCG/SCC, no TSO/RPC
4th – VH/RC, no SCG/SCC
5th – Start Again

If you find that you are pulling the boss at the start of the boss like I do :P, then well done! but seriously replace MS / MB with 1 SS / SB instead then MS / MB or get your tank to taunt off you that way he alot of threat when he does.

Vent Heat (VH) / Recharge Cell (RC) can be used roughly every 4th rotation or when required.

If you kill something and then need to help kill something else dont start again in the rotation unless your Heat/Energy Cells can take it. Just continue through your rotation depending on your situation.

The whole point of a AS / IO Commando/Mercenary is to keep triggering/refreshing your cell so if you find that you cant keep the cell alive then put in an extra RS / HS.

That is it. Enjoy!

6. Sarlacc Digest

Sir Salisbury shall tell us the story of another recent MMO that failed but was then born again, and how the successful lessons they learned could be applied to SWTOR.

  • Game Update 4.0.3 was deployed during regular maintenance on Tuesday.
  • The Relics of the Gree event is active until 15 December. Note that achievements that require player kills are not working, as they require bolster which is not currently active on the Western Ice Shelf on Ilum.
  • The fourth anniversary rewards are available until midnight on Sunday 3 January 2016. Note that searching on the GTN was broken in the update, and was not fixed in Patch 4.0.3a.
  • Cartel Packs, starting with the latest (the Strategy Alliance Pack), will now include two primary slots containing armor or a mount, rather than just one (the way they used to be). Along with this change, the Bronze, Silver and Gold Packs have been temporarily removed.
  • An exploit, introduced in Game Update 4.0, that allowed the infinite duplication of currency was resolved in the update, and action is being taken against those who made use of the exploit.
  • A two-part interview with BioWare about Knights of the Fallen Empire was posted on mmorpg.com (part 1, part 2).

OotiniCast Episode 236

In the news we cover the companion de-/un-nerf, the piles o’ corpses bug, and Patch 4.0.2a. We then discuss the issues raised by our guest Holly’s article on how we got to KotFE and the importance of growing the community.

1. Introduction

2. Tip of the week

Please send your tips to ootinicast@gmail.com by next Tuesday for a chance to win a Taunfawn or M8-3R droid code, courtesy of BioWare, and an OotiniCast-provided Cartel Market pack from the latest shipment.

3. Holofeed

  • Following the nerf to companion healing and DPS in Game Update 4.0.2, BioWare requested feedback from the community on how it was working out in terms of difficulty in getting through the content. They took this feedback on board, and subsequently Michael Backus (Lead Designer) apologised for what they recognised was a misstep, and promised that all would be made right in Patch 4.0.2a.
  • After Game Update 4.0.2 was deployed, an issue was discovered where corpses of NPCs were not despawning in some areas, apparently mainly in phased Heroic 2+ areas. As the number of corpses increased, the lag in that planetary zone instance got more severe. The servers were restarted on Monday to give temporary relief to the problem.
  • Patch 4.0.2a was deployed on Tuesday morning that un-nerfed companions, but failed to fully resolve the corpse despawning issue; that was subsequently fixed in a server-side patch on Wednesday.
  • There will be a “big announcement”, specifically for subscribers, in the December Producer Livestream happening on Tuesday 1 December at 3-3:30pm PST. Writers Charles Boyd and Drew Karpyshyn commented that what was being announced was crazy, fun and the world (and BioWare) may not be ready.
  • As reported by XamXam, SWTOR has a new Lead Writer, Ian Ryan. Charles Boyd, who was formerly in that role, is now “Lead Designer – Creative” on SWTOR.
